Storyline 360 - images not rotated on publish

Hi folks,

Just seeing if anyone else is experiencing this. Some jpg images (not all) added to Storyline slides and then rotated (e.g., photo comes in landscape but actually needs to be portrait), don't stay rotated in the published version. I have two separate instances of this in two completely different Storyline projects. This doesn't happen to every jpg photo I add and then rotate. It seems to be random. But in both cases, AFTER I publish, one or more of the photos shows up in Review and is back to its original orientation. Looking at the .story file the photo is still rotated 90 degrees in the source file.

Driving me nuts because it seems to be randomly happening in multiple files.

I can't share my files due to NDAs with my client so I'm posting this general question to see if anyone else experiences this.

PS - so far, my fix is when a specific image isn't behaving on publish, I use an image editor to save the file, already rotated, as a png and import it back into Storyline as a png. This isn't ideal...

    Hi Jose,

Thank you for trying but as I said in my posts, this doesn't happen with every image nor does it happen only in markers. It's happening with images from different sources - some taken by SMEs using iPhones, some images whose source I don't know because they were older and exported from an older project. This is happening in more than one project using different base templates. It happens on images inserted onto slides directly (e.g., not in markers). BUT it's all RANDOM. Not all images that are rotated do this and I can't find any link between the ones that do and the ones that don't. So far I've found issues with SOME images in three separate projects. All three of them have different origins/base templates and they're all for different clients.

Unfortunately, also as I said in my original post, I can't share my project files for these clients. They're all covered under NDAs. The one image I shared was with the client's permission for that one image. They won't give permission for me to share the base files.

I was truly trying to see if this was an issue anyone else was experiencing. It seems it's not so I'll keep doing my best troubleshooting. If all else fails, I have to manipulate the images in an outside image program (like Photoshop or even saving out of a PowerPoint file with the image already rotated) and then import back into Storyline. It's frustratingly slow but I have no other workaround.

      Hi LeahHemeon,

Thanks for the additional information. I know how frustrating it is to troubleshoot something that happens randomly. If you notice the issue happening more frequently, please feel free to open a case with our support team here so we can have a support engineer take a closer look at the behavior.

Sorry for the delay - it was a few days before I could get back to these projects. Yes, the same thing happens when publishing to web and when previewing in Storyline. It's not the same images nor do they have a similar source. In one project (completely separate from the images I've shared attached), the rotated images were actually exported from one Storyline project and imported into a brand new project. Even then the images randomly rotated a different direction.

In the image, you'll see one example where this is happening in a marker. I inserted an image and then added 90 degree rotation to it. When published it's rotated back to the original but the orientation is still as if it were vertical (90 degrees). To be clear though -it's also happening when I just insert an image on a slide and rotate it. It's not just markers. Again, randomly and in multiple projects that have no correlation at all.

In case it's helpful, Storyline version is v3.100.34725.0

  • Hi LeahHemeon,

Thanks so much for reaching out!

This behavior certainly sounds odd. I'm curious is this issue only happens when publishing the course to Review 360. What happens if you publish the course for web? I understand which images this affects appears to be at random. Are there any common denominators between the two images where this happens (ex. where you got them from)?

It's difficult to determine the root cause without testing the images. You can also try to repair Storyline since this issue is affecting multiple files. Please let us know if you further assistance!
